The Train to Chiang Mai

Tuesday, May 1st was our day long train trip to Chiang Mai from Ayutthaya. The day started out with Thelma taking a shower and then drying off with a towel covered in ants. We had put some food we hadn't liked the night before in our bathroom trash and it had apparently attracted ants. Her towel was part of the path they took to the food. She was completely disgusted of course and she was actually bitten on the chest by several of them. She was not happy of course.

After the calamity of the morning, we headed to the train station. Of course...the train was almost 30 minutes late. Once on board, we were quite comfortable. We past several temples along the way including the one in Lop Buri that is swamped with monkeys. It was cool to see. Then, several hours into the trip...the train came to a screeching halt. No one knew what was going on. After about 15 mins, I stuck my head out off the train and saw a man under one of the cars beating something. No clue what it was, but about 10 mins later we started to roll again, but this time at a snails pace. We were barely rolling for over an hour. Needless to say, we were 2 hours late for our arrival time at the trip took over 12 hours. It was a long day, but the scenery was beautiful and I was very happy to see more of the country.

That night we checked into our hotel and crashed.
